Light Come Shining #2: Gevonden

Gisteren schreef ik over een frustratie. Ik kon de derde crisis van Dylan, zoals aangegeven in het boek Light Come Shining van Andrew McCarron, niet traceren. Een bar in Californië, zoals ik lees in een artikel van het Britse DailyMail. Ik heb gezocht in de twee belangrijkste biografiën over Dylan, Down The Higway van Howard Sounes (2001) en Behind The Shades: The 20th Anniversary Edition van Clinton Heylin. Wanneer ik de periode opzoek waarin Dylan God opnieuw zou ervaren, komt Californië niet ter sprake.

Gelukkig heeft Tom gereageerd met een citaat, waar ik wel verder mee kan. Tom zegt namelijk enkel dit: “5 oktober 1987: "I,m determined to stand, whether God will deliver me or not."”. Dat geeft me een tijdsaanduiding van deze uitspraak (5 oktober 1987), maar ook een rechtstreekse vindopdracht. Want het is juist deze quote die ik wél in de genoemde biografieën tegenkwam. Maar die hebben het niet over de Amerikaanse staat.

Laat ik beginnen met Heylin. Zijn biografie is qua opmaak leuk, omdat hij betrokkenen een grote quote geeft. Over deze crisis laat Heylin de zanger uitgebreid aan het woord, zodat we Dylan bijna horen zeggen:

“[In 1987] I'd kind of reached the end of the line. Whatever I'd started out to do, it wasn't that. I was going to pack it in... I [coulnd't] remember what it means... is it just a bunch of words? … I had to go through, a lot of red tape in my mind to get back there... [In Switzerland, though,] it's almost like I heard it as a voice. It wasn't like it was even me thinking it: 'I'm determind to stand, whether God will deliver me or not.' And all of a sudden everything just exploded. It exploded every wich way. And I noticed that all the people out there – I was used to look to them looking at the girl singers... I had them up there so I wouldn't feel so bad. But when that happened, nobody was looking at the girls anymore. They were looking at the main mike... I sort of knew – I've got to go out and play these songs. That's just what I must do. [1997]”

Voor de administratie, dit citaat staat op bladzijde 616 van de Heylin-biografie (Clinton Heylin, Behind The Shades: The 20th Anniversary Edition, 2011, uitgegeven bij Faber And Faber Ltd, Londen). Zoals gezegd, beschrijft ook Sounes deze depressie, hij doet dat niet met een groot citaat, maar doet het als volgt: “Years of poor album sales, and the negative publicity of his Christian conversion, had considerably reduced Bob's stature as a solo artist. He was no longer able to fill major stadiums without the support of a name band, such as Santana, The Heartbreakers, or The Grateful Dead. During the latter stages of his recent European tour with The Heartbreakers, he came to realize he was hiding behind bands and his backing singers. 'I had [the singers] up there so I wouldn't feel so bad,' he said. He was on stage in Locarno, Switzerland, when it struck him most strongley that he had lost touch with what he was doing as a performer. As he later recalled, a single phrase came to him as if from nowhere: I'm determined to stand, whether God wil deliver me or not. The audience came to see him, not the band or singers, and he had to perform his songs to the best of his ability. It was an epiphany. 'Everything just exploded. It exploded every wich way.'”

Deze allegatie is terug te vinden op bladzijde 445 en 446 uit Down The Highway: The Life Of Bob Dylan van de hand van Howard Sounes, in 2001 uitgegeven bij A Black Swan Book. In de bronnenlijst verantwoordt Sounes zijn citaat, het is afkomstig uit een interview met Newsweek van 6 oktober 1997, tien jaar na het beslissende moment. Mooi.

Dylan was die dag dus vastbesloten om bij zijn hernieuwde standpunt te blijven, ongeaccht of God hem wilde verlossen of niet. Via ExpectingRain en de Older Tourdates kom ik uit bij het betreffende optreden van 5 oktober 1987 in Piazza Grande in Locarno, Zwitserland.

En zo is ook deze frustratie opgelost. Sterker nog, het heeft een verhaal opgeleverd. Dat is het me uiteindelijk om te doen: verhalen vertellen. In dit geval vanuit een frustratie, maar daarom net zo mooi als elke andere reden tot een verhaal.
