Danko

Vandaag zou Rick Danko zijn 72e verjaardag hebben gevierd – ware het niet dat de legendarische bassist van The Band niet meer in leven is. Ruim twee weken geleden was de vijftiende “anniversary” van zijn sterfdag. Wat ik gelijk associeer met Danko, is zijn geweldige zang in het nummer It Makes No Difference – en dan vooral de versie van The Last Waltz.

Uiteraard denk ik bij Danko ook aan de tweede stem in One Too Many Mornings tijdens Dylan's “elektrische tournee” van 1966.

Kerstmis

Vanmorgen weer veel te vroeg wakker – dat krijg je met een werkrooster, waarbij je veel dagen achtereen vroeg moet opstaan. Het gaf me de gelegenheid om de elpee Christmas In The Heart uit de kast te trekken – nog even luisteren voor ik naar de kerk zou gaan.

Het is geen album wat ik vaak luister. Eens per jaar, met de Kerstdagen, haal ik de plaat tevoorschijn. Plots greep het album me. Luister dan niet naar de polka 'Must be Santa' of 'Winter Wonderland'. Maar luisterend naar 'Hark! The Herald Angels Sing' en 'O' Come All Ye Faithful (Adeste Fideles)', dacht ik: Dylan meent wat hij zingt.

Joe Cocker is dood. Zeventig jaar oud geworden. Opnieuw een leeftijdsgenoot van Dylan – na eerder al JJ Cale en Lou Reed. Ik herinner me van Cocker onder meer een gele cd die we van hem thuis hadden. Een cd met zijn grootste hits. Uiteraard met With A Little Help From My Friends. Maar er stond ook een Dylan-klassieker op: Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window. Die Dylan. Zelfs Joe Cocker kon niet om hem heen.

Het afgelopen jaar

Het afgelopen jaar was een bijzonder Dylan-jaar. Mogen we dat al concluderen, terwijl we nog tien dagen van 2014 hebben te gaan? Ik denk het wel; wat er de komende anderhalve week nog kan gebeuren, bevestigt alleen maar mijn gedachte uit de eerste zin.

Natuurlijk was daar de plotselinge aankondiging van Shadows In The Night. Dylan zette zomaar op zijn website het liedje 'Full Moon & Empty Arms', zonder verdere informatie. Langzaam maar zeker kwam de geruchtenmachine op gang, en zou het album eind augustus verschijnen.

Die release is uiteindelijk gezet op eind januari 2015 – dat weten we dan weer mede door het snelle uitgeven van The Basement Tapes Complete/Raw, deel 11 uit Dylans fameuze Bootleg Series. Dit album kwam nauwelijks aangekondigd – ik hield wel rekening met BS11, maar pas na Shadows In The Nigt, en dan met outtakes van Blood On The Tracks of The Gospel Years.

Enfin.

En dan was er nog dat optreden voor 1 persoon. Een experiment van een Zweedse documentairemaker, of je je gelukkiger voelt als je iets individueel meemaakt wat normaal voor een grote groep behoort te zijn. Het filmpje heeft een tijd op YouTube gestaan, maar is inmiddels verwijderd. Reden genoeg om de officiële film te bekijken.

Nog tien dagen te gaan voor dit kalenderjaar. Zullen we nog kruimels krijgen toegeworpen, de komende 240 uur?

Turkije

De afgelopen week was ik offline. Ik was een week in Turkije, het zuid-westen. Een mooie week gehad, en weinig met Dylan van doen gehad. Ik miste dus het grote nieuws dat Shadows In The Night eindelijk wordt uitgegeven!

Het Frank Sinatra-album ligt al een tijdje in de gedachten van mij als Dylan-fan – en waarschijnlijk bij veel meer andere “collega's”. Dinsdag 3 februari 2015 is de officiële release; van mijn platenboer begreep ik dat “Shadows” al 29 januari in de schappen ligt. Mooi om naar uit te kijken!

En dan is er nog dat filmpje van een kwartier over het concert voor 1 man. Jaloers makende beelden. Je zult maar als enige in het publiek zitten, als de grootmeester een (mini-)concert speelt. Ik trek me tegelijk maar op aan de woorden van de 'hoofdpersoon': hij voelde zich enorm vereerd dat Dylan alleen voor hem speelde, maar gelijk ná het optreden miste hij toch iemand om zijn gevoelens mee te delen.

Enfin.

Ik ben weer thuis.

Experiment Ensam

Het privé-optreden dat Dylan zondag gaf in Philadelphia, was geen publiciteitsstunt. Het was een onderdeel van de film Experiment Ensam. De film gaat over eenlingen, die iets voor elkaar krijgen wat slechts voor de massa is. In dit geval dus een concert: normaal voor een volle zaal, dit keer voor één persoon.

Voor Dylan misschien een mooie (betaalde) rehearsel. Voor Fredrik Wikingsson een belevenis om nooit te vergeten. Gebeurde het mij maar! Ik ben jaloers, ja. Stikjaloers. Nu maar hopen dat er materiaal van dit optreden op de soundtrack van de film staat. Of beter: dat Dylan het tweede verzoek van Fredrik Wikingsson inwilligt: de release van de EP 'Songs for Fredrik'.

The New Basement Tapes – Lost On The River

De aanlooptijd van The New Basement Tapes was een stuk langer dan die van de grote broer The Basement Tapes Complete (Bootleg Series 11). De beide albums verschenen min of meer gelijktijdig, en geven daardoor een aardig beeld van wat er in de periode na Dylans motorongeluk heeft plaatsgevonden.

Waar The Basement Tapes Complete vooral de creativiteit en muzikaliteit van Dylan en The Band laat horen, toont The New Basement Tapes vooral Dylan als dichter. Onder de bezielende leiding van T Bone Burnett, heeft een aantal muzikanten verloren teksten van Dylan op melodie gezet.

De namen van Marcus Mumford (van Mumford & Sons), Elvis Costello en Jim James (van My Morning Jacket) werden al snel genoemd. Misschien mijn eigen naïviteit, gevoed door het idee dat dit project vergelijkbaar is met The Lost Notebook van Hank Williams... – ik dacht dat deze artiesten elk een eigen liedje speelden voor het album. Dat is niet het geval. Ik begrijp uit het cd-boekje dat Mumford, Costello en Jim James een gelegenheidsformatie vormden. Met als bandnaam The New Basement Tapes.

De band is verder aangevuld met Rihannon Giddens en Taylor Goldsmith. Elk van deze vijf bandleden zette een tekst van Dylan op muziek, waarvoor ze zelf de lead vocals voor hun rekening nemen. De overige artiesten bespelen de instrumenten. Soms aangevuld met andere muzikanten of gasten (zoals acteur Johnny Depp...).

Wat dat betreft doet Lost On The River denken aan The Band – liedjes uit de kelder van Big Pink, teksten van Dylan, een aantal sterke leadvocalisten die ook multi-instrumentalisten zijn. Maar verwacht niet dat Lost On The River een aftreksel is van Bob Dylan, The Band of wat dan ook. Het is een gelegenheidsformatie die zich vooral laat inspireren door hun eigen voorkeuren: folk, pop, rock, zonder dat The Band ergens wordt gesuggereerd. Al was het maar vanwege de afwezigheid van de orgel van Garth Hudson.

Enfin.

Blijven luisteren. Ik ben het album nog aan het determineren. Een inhoudelijk verhaal volgt dus nog.

10-11-'03

Elf jaar geleden viel 10 november ook op een maandag. Die avond ging ik naar mijn tweede Bob Dylan-concert. Voor het eerst betrad ik de Heineken Music Hall. Wat ik me herinner, waren vooral de reacties achteraf. Dylan speelde op een “piano”, een keyboard met piano-geluid. Heel sterk klonk dat niet. Sowieso was het geluid die avond niet heel denderend.

Maar toch, zo slecht als de steward na afloop zei, was het ook niet. Die beste man zei dat hij blij was, dat hij de volgende avond naar Metallica ging. Misschien zegt dat meer iets over 's mans eigen voorkeuren.

Tegelijk gaf Dylan wel een paar pareltjes weg. Hoogtepunt was zonder meer Girl Of The North Country, een eerbetoon aan Johnny Cash die enkele weken eerder was overleden. Dylan en Cash namen dit nummer op voor het country-album Nashville Skyline uit 1969.

Na dit concert volgden nog vijf andere Nederlandse concerten van Dylan, die ik heb bezocht. In totaal dus zeven optredens, “and still counting” wat mij betreft.

Aantekeningen #13: Losse eindjes

Het is vandaag precies 25 jaar geleden dat de Berlijnse Muur viel. Belangrijke mensen, popsterren, kunstenaars en politici verdringen elkaar om te bewijzen dat juist zíj van belang waren geweest voor 'Die Wende'. Vergelijkbare taferelen als bij de afschaffing van de apartheid. In het geval van de Muur, krijgt Bruce Springsteen de eer dat hij de Muur slechtte. Met het nummer Chimes Of Freedom, van Bob Dylan.

Gisteravond ben ik bij Tangarine geweest. De tweelingbroers speelden in Poppodium Romein in Leeuwarden. Romein was vroeger de Westerkerk. Een prettige omgeving voor de gereformeerd opgevoede jongens. Tijdens het nummer Life Falls Down speelden de Brinks-broers het eerste couplet en het refrein van Blowin' In The Wind. Ik had een top-avond.

Dylan zou in 1969 een plaat willen maken met The Beatles en The Rolling Stones. Volgens producer Glyn Johns vonden Keith Richards en George Harrison het idee “fantastisch, maar zij waren dan ook grote Dylanfans. Ringo [Starr], Charlie [Watts] en Bill [Wyman] stonden open voor het idee, zolang alle anderen ook geïnteresseerd waren. Paul [McCartney] en Mick [Jagger] vonden het echter maar niets."

Zou dit bericht waar zijn? Of een broodje aap van Johns, om zijn biografie extra aan te zetten? Ik weet het niet, maar het verhaal vind ik wel een sterk verhaal. Bewijzen kan ik het niet, maar ik heb er maar mijn eigen ideeën over.

Basement Tapes

Mijn hofleverancier meldde me dat Lost On The River nog niet binnen is. Dat is jammer, want het zou een mooie aanvulling zijn op The Basement Tapes Complete. Het verhaal is inmiddels wel bekend: de teksten voor Lost On The River werden door Dylan geschreven ten tijde van The Basement Tapes, maar nimmer op muziek gezet. Onder de bezielende leiding van T-Bone Burnett hebben onder meer Marcus Mumford (van Mumford & Sons) en Elvis Costello (“a man who needs no introduction”) die teksten op melodie gezet. Dat resultaat heet Lost On The River.

Enfin, die cd laat dus nog even op zich wachten, hoewel de Europese release vandaag is. We moeten geduld hebben. En dat is dan weer niet zo heel moeilijk, want in de tussentijd draai ik gewoon The Basement Tapes Complete.
