Bovenstaand de setlist van gisteravond in Koninklijk Theater Carré in Amsterdam (met dank aan BobLinks), avond 1 van 3. Wat ik heb gehoord van bezoekers, is dat het een erg sterk optreden is geweest.

Setlist Eindhoven, Nederland 17 februari 1993

Ik heb een fout gemaakt door mijn journalistieke administratie niet goed op orde te hebben. Dinsdag schreef ik dat Dylan zijn debuut maakte in Eindhoven. Dat is niet juist, het optreden in het Muziekgebouw in de Noord-Brabantse stad was reeds zijn tweede concert aldaar. Zelfs de concertzaal was identiek aan het vorige optreden. Dolf was zo opmerkzaam om mij te wijzen dat ik in gebreke ben gebleven.

Ik wil mijn fout herstellen door de setlist van die avond in 1993 hieronder alsnog te vermelden, inclusief de huishoudelijke zaken rondom het concert.

Notes from a fan in the audience:

Suddenly at the start of The Times They Are A-Changin' there's a girl standing on stage. Blond, dressed in black, wearing a hat like it could have been a souvenir of the Rolling Thunder Revue. She wants to sing with Dylan. The bodyguard wants to take her away, but Dylan says it's OK. They sing the first verse together. She sings great! Then Dylan steps back to play some guitar, probably expected her to leave, but she stays on stage. Dylan shows her his guitar as if he wants to say: "Maybe you wanna take this over as well?" Then the bodyguard again comes to take her away, but Dylan again says it's OK. They sing the whole song together (and it sounds very good!) although Liz Souissi from Bern, Switzerland, is shaking all over, nervous as she is. All the time there are big cheers and lots of applause from the crowd. When the song is over, she starts to walk off stage, but then returns, giving Bob a big hug and kiss. This was front-page news in the local newspaper: “A Kiss for Swiss Liz”. Her comments: “This is what I always dreamed of. I almost didn't dare, but still I took a chance on it. Of course I expected to be taken away immediately. To me this is the most beautiful thing I ever experienced.” And it was beautiful for many people in the crowd. Bob even smiled when all this happened.

Vanavond dus niet optreden in Rouen (Frankrijk), maar een vrije avond. Donderdagavond moet Dylan weer aantreden, maar dan in Amsterdam.

Vanavond is het de beurt aan het Muziekgebouw in Eindhoven.

Balans

Vandaag is het Allerheiligen, morgen volgt Allerzielen. Bob Dylan begint vanavond aan deel 2 van zijn Europese tournee. Het optreden staat gepland in Forest National in Bussel, de hoofdstad van België en de Europese Unie. Morgenavond staat het Muziekgebouw in Eindhoven op de agenda, om na twee dagen rust de draad op te pakken in het Amsterdamse theater Carré.

Is het nodig om een tussenbalans op te maken? Dylan heeft een vaste setlist dan toch gevonden. Waren aan het begin de Frank Sinatra-songs nog inwisselbaar via een soort carrousel, nu heeft ook de crooner zijn vaste plek gevonden in Dylan's performance.

Met de Nederlandse concerten voor de boeg, stijgt ook de aandacht in de media voor Bob Dylan. Via sites als ExpectingRain en Bob Dylan in (het) Nederland(s) is te zien hoe Dylan piekt in de media der Lage Landen. Waarbij het ook helpt dat eind deze week deel 12 verschijnt van de fameuze Bootleg Series: The Cutting Edge 1965-1966.

Avond #2720 sinds de start van The Never Ending Tour in 1988. Vrijwel vanaf de start van deze indrukwekkende tournee (een jaar later) kwam bassist Tony Garnier in de begeleidingsband; Garnier maakt nog steeds deel uit van Dylan's begeleidingsband en geldt als de muzikale leider. Het Eindhovens Dagblad heeft hieraan een aangenaam artikel gewijd.

Dylan in de Lage Landen. Nooit eerder gaf de bard zoveel concerten tijdens een tourleg (een 'aflevering' in zijn tourschema) in Nederland: vier. Wel vaak één of twee avonden, waarna Dylan door ging. Een keer eerder trad hij vaker op, in 2009 gaf hij drie optredens in de Heineken Music Hall. Komende week dus drie optredens in Carré, plus een concert in Eindhoven.

Eén van de komende Carré-shows wordt mijn zevende Dylan-concert. De man verveelt nooit, zelfs niet – of juist omdat – hij zichzelf letterlijk in de schaduw zet. Het gaat bij Dylan steeds minder om zijn eigen persoon en performance, maar steeds meer om zijn boodschap. Dylan als een soort dominee, bijna.

Een onwillig profeet, misschien zelfs.

Maar dan is het alweer teveel interpretatie en Dylan voor een eigen karretje spannen. I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.

Een tussenbalans? Nee, dat is het niet geworden.
