Kerstavond

De avond voorafgaand aan Kerst heet Kerstavond. Maar hoe het de avond vooraf aan Kerstavond? Die dag heeft geen naam, volgens mij. Het valt nog net onder de Adventsperiode. Advent betekent 'verwachten'. We moeten geduld hebben, we verwachten nog iets. 

Morgen leg ik Christmas in the Heart maar op de draaitafel. Toch maar. Omdat het bijna kerst is. Maar zover is het nog niet. Geduld.

Dan is er nog dat interview met Jeff Slate van The Wall Street Journal, waarin Dylan onder meer dit zegt: "I’m a religious person. I read the scriptures a lot, meditate and pray, light candles in church. I believe in damnation and salvation, as well as predestination. The Five Books of Moses, Pauline Epistles, Invocation of the Saints, all of it."

Volgens Marnix, de host van Bob Dylan door de ogen van een jongen, heeft Dylan sinds zijn gospelperiode zich nooit echt duidelijk uitgelaten over zijn geloof – al moet ook gezegd worden dat hij het geloof nooit openlijk heeft afgezworen. Dat betwijfel ik een beetje.

In een interview met David Gates voor Newsweek van oktober 1997, zei de bard: Here's the thing with me and the religious thing. This is the flat-out truth: I find the religiosity and philosophy in the music. I don't find it anywhere else. Songs like 'Let Me Rest on a Peaceful Mountain' or 'I Saw the Light'—that's my religion. I don't adhere to rabbis, preachers, evangelists, all of that. I've learned more from the songs than I've learned from any of this kind of entity. The songs are my lexicon. I believe the songs.

En was er rond Christmas in the Heart niet dat interview met Bill Flanagan? Met die ene alinea: 

BF: You really give a heroic performance of O' LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM The way you do it reminds me a little of an Irish rebel song. There's something almost defiant in the way you sing, "The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight." I don't want to put you on the spot, but you sure deliver that song like a true believer.

BD: Well, I am a true believer.

En dan nog dat interview met 60 Minutes in 2004, waarin de zanger het heeft over de chief commander? "It goes back to that destiny thing. I mean, I made a bargain with it, you know, long time ago. And I’m holding up my end. With the Chief Commander, in this earth and in a world we can’t see.”

Morgen is het Kerstavond. Nog even geduld.
